Recently had dinner with 6 of my loved ones at this Indonesian restaurant that beautifully incorporated French culinary elements. The portions were meant for sharing, which was a nice touch, but they were indeed on the smaller side. What stood out was how they blended the rich flavors of Indonesia with a delicate French touch. It genuinely felt like enjoying a cozy home-cooked meal, which added to the overall experience. It was a delightful dining experience that left us with a good impression.
Had made reservations for a table of five for Saturday brunch, and the restaurant was kind enough to seat us in our table even after a part of our party bailed out on us at the last minute. Their five person table facing the street as you enter the restaurant is beautiful (and perfect for a group of six adults.
We got started with some cocktails which included a very nice Rye based drink, Instant Zen ($17). It was packed with a nice taste and a kick!
For food, we got the Crab Fried Rice ($32) from their Large Plates section, and the Crispy Pandan French Toast ($18) - both being absolutely delicious! The portion size and price ratio felt a bit off with the crab fried rice, but the expert consuming that plate had very good things to say about it - specifically with the way the "fishy" crab meat smell was controlled on that plate.
Service was absolutely fantastic right from being greeted by a friendly host to servers. The restaurant set-up was also very beautiful with very good outdoor seating options! Will definitely visit again for trying out their dinner menu!
The food is good, but the service can be a little indifferent for the price of a meal at Wayan. It’s owned by Jean-George’s son and his wife - they’ve also had a couple of restaurants in Jakarta. Highlights of the menu are the pork ribs and lobster noodles. Desserts and cocktails are notable too. Interiors are dim, and appropriately tropical, but not that interesting or sophisticated. Go for consistently good Indonesian cuisine. Bring your expense account - but maybe not your best clients.
Overall very great flavors in a dimly lit, very cool atmosphere. The highly touted lobster ramen that seems to be their signature dish is really good, but I don’t know if I would say we were blown away. Good chunks of lobster and the peppery flavor was a nice complement to how creamy and buttery the noodles were. We also got the octopus , tartare, and satay combination platter which all were nicely seasoned and well balanced - just small portions sizes.
The standout for us was the pandan custard with passionfruit. Richly flavored with vanilla bean specks and pandan, the custard is silky and soft and melts in the mouth - a great contrast to the tangy and tart passionfruit seeds. Really really great restaurant and definitely worth a try!
First time there, lunch at the bar. Not very busy and the food came in faster than I expected. Sophisticated fusion food - French technique with Indonesian flavor, winning combo. Bar man friendly and chatty, makes interesting cocktails while kept en eye on all of us dining at the bar. Would love to return.
This might be in the Top 5 Restaurants I love in NYC.
The ambiance, service, and food.. they were all amazing.
Portion sizes are definitely small even though they are meant to be shared (so you have to order multiple plates and yes, each of them are pretty pricey..). But I absolutely loved every dish that we ordered.
HIGHLY recommend the Banana Sundae..... it is one of the best desserts I ever had in my life.
Stumbled upon this place around 10:30pm on a Saturday night and we were able to get seated right away. We got the passion fruit dessert which was amazing!! They also have a good selection of non-alcoholic cocktails, we really liked the turmeric tonic, which wasn’t sugary at all. We had already had dinner when we came in, but I will be back to try the rest of the food as well!
